A powerful Lord from Alicante wants to marry his daughter to a nobleman whom she does not want, because she is in love with another gentleman whom she has just met. To truncate his father’s wishes, he requires the services of a deformed servant to solve the problem with false promises, so that what at first seems a simple game of love and deception ends up becoming a hard story of passions and betrayals that converge in a brutal denouement.
EL TRUEQUE (The Changeling, Thomas Middleton and William Rowley, 1622) is the only English Renaissance play that is historically located in Alicante, specifically in the Church of Santa María and the Castle of Santa Bárbara, emblematic places of the city. We stage the “Premier” of the Spanish version of the drama, celebrating this year the four hundredth anniversary of its premiere in English.
