Ladies Football Club
April 1917. The women workers of Doyle & Walker Ammunition in Sheffield are eating sandwiches in the factory yard. Their husbands, brothers, fathers… are at the front and for that reason it is the women who are now working, in the factory that supplies the army with armaments. But that day, finding an abandoned ball in the yard, Rosalyn, Violet, Olivia and the others begin to play.
Eventually they refine their technique and someone suggests they play in a “real league”. In the absence of men’s championships, girls’ football in those years will have its first golden season and win the public’s affection. It will, however, be less welcomed by the men’s football institutions who, once the war is over, will do everything they can to make the women “take their place again”. The play is inspired by the true story of the first women’s football teams in the UK.
